A call number is an alpha-numeric code that tells you where a book is located on the shelf. Each book has its own unique call number which is attached on or near the book's spine. A book's call number also appears in the library's online catalogue entry. Books are sorted alphabetically first, then numerically.

Example of a call number showing: First line: the first letter of the call number represents one of the 21 major subjects. The second letter represents subdivision of the subject. Second line: numbers that help to define the subject area Third line: Letter and number combination that represents a code for author’s name. Fourth line: publication year.

To see which call numbers are located on what floors in both the Porter and Davis libraries please refer to our library floor plans

Signs with the call numbers by floor are posted beside the elevators at Dan Porter library and on the stacks in both Davis and Dana Porter libraries.
